Seasons… What Are They Really Like?

Per our last blog, we mentioned that the seasons are swapped here! By that, it is really two different seasonal changes. We here in Iquitos don’t actually experience the four seasonal changes that the US does. Essentially, we experience rainy season, and not rainy season. 🌧️🚫 Trust me when I say this, not rainy season is still rainy hahaha. In reality it just means that there is less frequency for rain but it is still very much part of everyone’s lives!

The photos I am showing you here are of the river around August. This is similar to US summer. Muggy, hot, and in desperate need of some rainfall! The river itself is very dry. While the amazon river itself is robust and full of water, the mini river streams that fishermen use are virtually impossible to access. 🎣 Tourist boats also have to find alternative routes. Sad for the tourists as the more unique and vibrant river streams are accessible on the “off-season” of tourism. There is still plenty to see in the summer months, but the heat is definitely the downside as well.

If you examine these photos though, you will see that the river is thriving! 🤯 The river is much higher and can’t help but bleed into all sorts of new areas. Places that were once dry and converted to soccer fields, are now flooded with water. ⚽️🌊 This means better access to areas once closed off during the dry season. It is almost as if the river itself is breathing. Rising and falling.

What a truly marvelous thing to witness in our daily lives. It is not often that we go to the river, but watching the changes from afar are a sight to see. If you ever get the opportunity to visit the amazon river for yourself, even from afar, it is absolutely worth it! 💕
